I use the Lift-A-Flaps as a way to get to know my third graders at the beginning of the school year and to teach them about writing paragraphs. They must write a complete sentence about themselves under each flap. Sentence fluency is stressed, as they must begin each sentence with a different word. After their Lift-A-Flap is completed and decorated, they write a paragraph by writing a beginning sentence, copying all of the Lift-A-Flap sentences, and writing an ending sentence. The Lift-A-Flaps and paragraphs are displayed on a bulletin board for the parents to see at the parent information night. The title of the bulletin board is: Take a Peek at Third Grade! The students are very proud to see their hard work displayed and read by parents and peers.
