How To Play:

Students spin the arrow, identify the number (2, 3, 4, or 5), and search for a picture card with the same number of phonemes.

When a card is found, the player picks it up, names it, says its sounds (e.g., cat, /k/ /a/ /t/), and places it on his or her Spin Game Sheet Reproducible.

After using all the cards, students turn them over to check their work and add up their points. (The number of red dots represents the number of phonemes for each word).

The player with the most points is the winner.

The ease of instruction and picture cards makes this learning center activity accessible to all students, especially English Language Learners, who can benefit from using picture cues to acquire new vocabulary.

Not Ready to Play-Parts Need to Be Made

For a product advertised as a "center in a bag", I expected to have all of the parts included and just about ready to go. When I opened the package to get it ready for my class the day before using it, I realized there would be more prep that I expected. The game requires mats for each player which are provided in the form of a reproducible on the back of the Activity Guide. The makers tell you to make copies for each player and to have them write points in the boxes and add them up at the end of the game to find the winner. If my students could do this, they wouldn't need to segment phonemes. Turning it into laminated cardstock for durability allowed my groups to collect cards and have fun together practicing this skill and just sorting the cards into the different boxes without competing for points.
