End of the Year Idea: Create a Recipe for the Ideal Student
Each year, as school draws to a close, I have students write a first-grade recipe book designed to offer the incoming students a taste of first grade.
After talking with students about the meaning of the word “seasoned” and after reviewing cooking and measurement terminology with them, I help each child write a “Recipe for a First Grader” that includes a list of ingredients a first grader needs to do well in my class. Such a list might include:
- 5 cups of listening ears,
- 10 cups of reading skills,
- 3 tablespoons of sitting quietly,
- 4 ounces of helping others,
- 6 pinches of giggles, etc.
I have children illustrate their pages, copy the pages, then bind them into books titled Recipes for Success from Seasoned First Graders. Each child gets a copy and I save a copy to share with my incoming class on the first day of school next school year.
