It is getting to be that time of the year again. The time when school starts winding down and Mother’s and Father’s Day are close at hand. For many schools, the year has ended before Father’s Day arrives in June. Instead of forgetting about dads completely, many teachers have a Donuts with Dad morning to celebrate the fathers of their students. Use the ideas below to create your own Donuts with Dad event before the school year is through.
You’re Invited to Donuts with Dad
There is no better way to invite Dad to a Donuts with Dad event than with a donut shaped invitation. Whether you teach preschool or elementary school, you students will get a kick out of making their own donut invitations. Use a piece of tan (vanilla) or brown (chocolate) construction paper to cut a circle for the card base. Use a colored piece of construction paper to cut out the “frosting” for your donut. Dot the frosting with dabs of glue and scatter glitter on them to make “sprinkles.” After the outside dries, have students copy down the date, time, and wording for the invitation on the inside. Be sure to include a request for an RSVP, so that you can plan for the right amount of guests.
Donut Acrostic Poems
Make use of poetry month and have students turn the word “donut” into an acrostic poem about their dad. Encourage them to describe his personality, things they like to do together with him, or other description that will show their dads how much they mean to them. Have students write their final drafts on large donut cut-outs.
Donut Toss
If you would like to provide an activity for students and dads to participate in, consider having a donut toss. Set up a bucket and measure five or six feet from the edge. Using stale donut holes (they are harder than fresh ones), have each father and child see who can toss the most donut holes in the bucket. Expect a lot of laughter and some crumbs!
Daddy and Me Pictures
Be sure to snap a digital picture of each student with his or her father. Print the pictures out and let students make circular frames from heavy cardboard. They can decorate the frames to look like donuts before you place the photos inside. Include a small thank you card that lets the dads know how much you (and your students) appreciated them coming out.
Be sure to invite grandfathers, uncles or other important male figures in your students’ lives if their fathers are not present. If you know of a child who will not have someone there that day, ask a male teacher in your building to be there for that child. With a bit of planning and some excited children, your Donuts with Dad event can be a highlight of the year.

Great ideas. We usually forget about Dad’s since we are out of school. I really like the acrostic poem idea! Thanks.

Having a Dad Day at school is such a nice idea! Everyone does a Mother’s Day project and it’s great to remember the hard work dads do too!

Our school schedules Donuts with Dad during March Madness. Seems to be a good time of year, before the end of year craziness! We have been averaging about 1/3 of the students have dads (or significant male figure) present. I think it is amazing!!
