Identify And Use Text Features To Locate Information

Students use text features to comprehend informational text. The features of three different pieces of informational text are isolated on five different text cards. Each highlights a different text feature (table of contents, graphics with captions, bold print, headings, charts, maps, glossary, and index.) Students place the cards in the sequence in which they would find them in a book. They are then tasked to identify text features, locate specific information, and generalize information. The How to Use Text Features card with graphics and color helps students identify parts of a book and locate information quickly.

How to Use Text Features

I used this at the end of the year with my higher level 2nd graders, and it takes a lot of explicit teaching for how to use this center. I think this would be easier for the older grades to use. I do like how it does give practice in a practical skill-- finding information using text features, rather than reading a whole non-fiction book.
