Public Library Cards Encourage a Love of Reading.
Public Library Cards Encourage a Love of Reading.
Idea by Theresa, 2nd Grade Teacher, Newark, Delaware:
Each year, I ask families to help the children in my class obtain a public library card. This year, in accordance with our science unit, I asked my children to use their cards to borrow a book about their favorite insect. I then ask them to come to school with their card and their borrowed books. I help them notice that all the bug books they borrowed share the call number 595 because similar books in a library are grouped together. I then snap a photo of each student holding his or her library card. I display these photos in our hallway along with a favorite library poem:
The more you read, the more you know.
The more you know, the smarter you grow.
The smarter you grow, the stronger your voice,
When speaking your mind or making a choice.
At year’s end, I invite the children's librarian to visit our class so she can motivate my students to join the library’s summer reading program where they will share favorite children's books and stories all summer long.
