November 2009 Teacher Story Of The Month

    Mid-Year Math Assessment.
By Colleen, Kindergarten Teacher, Avon, Illinois:

As part of our mid-year math assessment, we ask our children to attempt to print the numbers 1-20 independently and without visual cues. Recently, as the first child approached the math table for testing, I saw him eyeing my large demonstration numbers along with a chart of the numbers 1 to 100 displayed on a nearby wall. I had almost forgotten they were there!

I carefully arranged the little boy in a chair so his back was to that wall. I reminded him to write his numbers the best that he could, and I added, "Be sure not to look." I then proceeded to work with another student at the same table. After a few minutes, I glanced over at my test candidate and was surprised to discover his paper was covered in a jumble of numbers, written in no particular order. Some numbers were even scrawled on top of others. I then noticed he was trying to write his numbers with his eyes closed! I asked him why in the world he was doing that, and he responded, "Well, you told me not to look!"
