Magic Pumpkin Story and Activity Intrigues Young Students.
Idea by Deidre, 1st Grade Teacher, Knoxville, Tennessee:

Every year around Halloween I recall the legend of the "Magic Pumpkin," a story about a pumpkin that rolled all the way to our school with a note asking our school children to carve it. Of course, the next day, we find just such a pumpkin complete with a note sitting in our classroom door. The note says that if the children carve the pumpkin into a "Jack-O'-Lantern," they will discover a special surprise.

Prior to placing the pumpkin near our classroom door, I carved a small hole in the pumpkin’s bottom, placed a plastic bag filled with candy inside and replaced the plug with a toothpick. Once the pumpkin top is cut open and the pumpkin is hallowed out, the children are delighted to discover the candy surprise.
