October 2009 Teacher Story Of The Month

    Halloween Fun!
By Laurie, Teacher of Gifted Students K-8, Cherry Hill, New Jersey:

Every year as Halloween approaches, my students and I complete a unit on skeletons and surgery. Each year I conclude the unit by inviting an orthopedic surgeon friend of mine to visit my class as a guest speaker and display some tools of his trade. In preparation for his visit, we were talking about operations and what they entail. One of my 2nd graders announced that he knew all about scalpels. Then he went on to explain, " My brother had surgery with a scalpel. He had his ‘independix’ out!"
