Robin Moss from Wilmore, Kentucky:
When my students enter the room in the morning, they always have seat work (skills practice) on their desks. They also hear the soothing classical music playing from the moment they arrive. I praise them regularly when they are being nice quiet workers, and it just gets our day off to a better start. Another thing is to use lamp lights as opposed to the harsh florescent lights. The key is to quickly praise the behavior you desire.

Teachers need to model quiet behavior. Throughout the day, your voice needs to be calm and normal, even when you become upset. Never raise your voice or yell...your students will quickly catch on. There's nothing worse than seeing a teacher scream, "Be quiet!!" Do you see the hypocrisy there? Here's a test: whisper directions and you'll see how quiet students become. The calmer the teacher, the calmer the students.

Karan Lander from Woodbridge, NJ:
I teach fourth grade and I have a behavior system set up using red (any color is good) 50/50 raffle tickets for good behavior. Whenever I see a student transitioning, reading independently, doing a good deed, etc...I very quietly hand them a raffle ticket. They put their name on it and put it into my "ticket" bucket in the front of the room. On Friday's I pull 3 tickets and those students recieve a small token of appreciation. I usually buy $1 store gifts in which I put in a special bag and display for them to choose from. The students are extremely receptive to this system and you will see that all students become quickly and quietly on task when the see you just as quietly passing out tickets for good behavior!

I tell my students to turn their volume lower, lower, lower. (Sometimes I tell them to "record" things in their memory that they'll need to "playback" or to "pause" instead of asking them to hold that thought for later.) They are so comfortable with technology terms!

I am a First grade teacher. I give out "Honeybee" tickets to students who are working quietly, paying attention, and trying their best. At the end of the day, I collect those tickets, put them in a basket, and raffle off three little prizes. This positive reward system works!

Choose a certain word to spell out on the board. I use the word QUIET. Each time the students are talking when they shouldn't be, I write a letter on the board. If they haven't spelled out the whole word by the end of the day, then they get 2 minutes of "talk time." If they have spelled out the whole word, then they do not get any "talk time."

Focus on Giving and Earning I believe we take too much away. Rather than focusing on the negative, such as pulling a card, how about students earning that card or point. At the very least, we typically give children reward stickers. An "earnings chart" really shows that they did earn their reward sticker or little gadget. We can act like parents - taking away, but why not do something different. What's happening at home, often isn't working even when it's an attempt by parents to work with the teacher. I say it's time to turn it around to the positive. Let's give rather than take.

During work or writing time, when I expect them to stay relatively quiet and focused on their work, I put on New Age instrumental music and set it at a level that can be heard if people are working quietly. I tell them that if they can't hear the music, they're too loud (not the person next to them). If the noise level rises I simply ask if they can hear the music.

We talk about things that go together, ie. salt and pepper,spaghetti and meatballs, etc. Then when I want them to be quiet, I'll say "Spongebob" and they'll respond "Squarepants!" this is their favorite. I also use diffenent ones during holidays such as Jingle - Bells, pumpkin -pie, etc.

When I taught Kdg. I would use a quiet voice at times when teaching a lesson. Another great technique is to make sure your centers or workstations have boundries. When children have small places they seem to better focus and communitcate in quiet. Wide open spaces tend to encourage them to be loud because they want to be heard.

Post everything so they don't have to ask questions. Since Kindergarteners and First graders are new readers, some of the things you post would have to be pictures. This has really cut down on the unnecessary noise in my classroom. For example, I post my schedule for the entire day so that they know what is next. I post the page numbers next to Spelling and Math, etc. so I don't have to tell 20+ students what page we are on. I also reward quiet teams with points and the most points wins a popcorn party at the end of the week. They remind each other to be quiet!

I teach first graders and I write the word RECESS on the blackboard. If it starts getting noisy I erase an S. If all the letters get erased whenever the next recess is they have to sit. I give them the chance of earning letters back. Very rarely do they miss recess. Sometimes I just have to pick up the eraser and it gets deathly quiet.

I have very good success with playing quiet classical music in the background as we are working on something that requires quiet time and no conversation. We call it "Concentrating Music" and they love it. If I forget to turn it on, they ask for it.

I don't teach Kindergarten or 1st grade, but something that works for me with my fifth graders is a Really Good Stuff product. It is the Noise Level chart which I use to let students know what noise level they should use during various classroom activities. There is an arrow which you can move to the required noise level. Complete quiet is one of the levels. It includes working with a buddy and group voice levels and it seems to really work with the children. Purchase one and it might make a difference. I also use a hand-held quiet sign at times. These both save you from having to constantly tell students to be quiet.

I find that when I am teaching, I talk in a quiet and relaxing tone of voice. The students have to be quiet in order to hear what I have to say!!

I keep m&m's, skittles, and tickets in my pocket. The students never know when I am going to give them out. The tickets can be used to get an item from the Treasure Chest when they have 10 or more. The children love this and it promotes quiet work time. The m&m's and skittles can be eaten when they get one. I always choose the quitest ones, but if the entire class is quiet, they all get something.

We have "table competitions." Each time every student at a table is doing their job and staying quiet, the table gets a point. On Monday morning, we total up the points and those students sitting at that table receive a special prize...for my kids, it's a cool pencil. They love it and they love working together to achieve a common goal. And once one point is given, the others usually follow with good behavior. :o)

I tell the children, "Did you know I can talk to you without using my voice?" And then I go on to teach them many "signs", such as shhh, sit, come here, work, good job, etc... I also say they can "help" a friend by giving them a sign as needed. We re-visit the signs at least once a week.

My kindergarteners, I’m sure like all, can get very chatty at times. I have a system that I use called, “Give Me 5”. The 5 expectations that I have for my students when I say “Give me 5” are: 1. Stop what you are doing 2. All eyes on me 3. Mouths are closed 4. Listening ears on 5. Hands and feet to selves I have large hands hanging up all over the classroom with the “Give Me 5” expectations on them. On the pinky I have a picture of a stop sign, on the ring finger a set of eyes, on the middle finger a mouth, on the pointer finger a set of ears, and on the thumb a picture of hands and feet. On the palm of the hands, I have the picture and the expectation written next to it. The pictures are a great reminder for the students who cannot read yet. The hands hanging all over the room are constant visual reminders of the “Give me 5” expectations, as well as the fact that they need to stay quiet so that I don’t have to say “Give me 5” during “quiet time”. I also use “Give me 5” when they students are working on activities that allow talking. When I say “Give me 5” they know that they are to stop what they are doing and follow the “Give me 5” guidelines. The students really seem to take to this concept and they do what they are expected to do when the hear “Give me 5”. I do though, still have to remind them at times, that I allow them plenty of talk time, so when it is my turn, they may not talk. I have to tell them that if they talk when it is my turn to talk, they will have to practice being silent during their next talk-time-activity. * I made my "Give Me 5" hands out of poster board. I cut out large hands, and drew everything else on. You could create your own hands with what ever 5 expectations you feel would work best for your class.

I chant "I like the way 'child's name' is sitting. And soon enough the other kids begin to copy that behavior. I also talk while they are responding, they look at me strange and then I ask them how it makes them feel when I interrupt them. Obviously they don't like it and I remind them how they make their friends feel and that 'family' must listen to eachother.
