Let’s face it, your students are going to be spending time online this summer. For some, it’s going to be a lot of time! Instead of lamenting that they’ll be wasting time or not getting the skill reinforcement that they need, put that online time to good use. Sandy, a 3rd-5th Grade Teacher from Bolivia, North Carolina came up with a great way of combining screen time with summer learning. Read more about how she did it below!
Summer Learning Fun
“To help keep my students interested in learning over the summer, I divide my class in half. I then let one half choose slips of paper printed with the names of the students. We call these pairings Summer Editing Partners. Partners must send emails (at least four sentences long) to one another. Each time one partner sends his or her partner an e-mail, the receiving partner edits it for spelling and mechanical mistakes. That partner then sends the edited e-mail back along with a reply email for his or her partner to edit. Parents help in this editing process.
This exercise allows students to practicing their writing and editing skills all while spending quality time with their parents. It has produced good results for us; some students even became best friends as a result of emailing one another!”
