While Valentine’s Day is traditionally thought of as a romantic holiday for adults, it can also be a great time to celebrate the love in a family. If you want to make your Valentine’s Day something special for everyone in the home, try one of the five ideas below. You will be sure to make memories and have your children begging for an encore next year.
Family Valentine’s Day Ideas
1. Very Hearty Breakfast
Start the day off with delicious heart shaped pancakes. Use a favorite recipe or a boxed mix for an easy and delicious breakfast. If you have a heart shaped pancake mold, use that to create heart pancaked. If no heart mold is available, add a few drops of red food coloring to your pancake mix to give it a pink glow. Add some milk and juice or fresh fruit to the mix, and you will have a Valentine’s Day breakfast that starts everyone off on the right foot.
2. Love Tree
Cover an empty coffee can with construction paper and let your children decorate it. Fill the bottom with pebbles, sand or decorative marbles and place a small tree branch in the center. Cut hearts out of construction paper and punch a hole in the top. After family members take turns writing things that they love about one another on the hearts, string a ribbon through the hole and hang it from the tree. It is a great reminder of how much everyone in the family is loved.
3. Date Night
Instead of date night being just for mom and dad, make it all about the family. Select a favorite movie, make some homemade heart-shaped pizza, and have a night in with your favorite family members. Some Valentine’s Day theme plates, napkins and cups will help make it much more festive.
4. Formal Dinner
Set the dining room table with the finest china and silver. Break out the crystal glasses and treat your family to a formal dinner. Encourage everyone to get “dressed up” in their finest for a special dinner that no one will forget. Short on time to make such a dinner? Do not panic. Pick up pre-made food at your grocery store’s deli counter for a quick and delicious meal.
5. Volunteer
Pick a favorite charity that you all support and spend the day volunteering. If you cannot volunteer on Valentine’s Day itself, choose a date around then to share your talents and love. When you do it together as a family, you will find that the experience is a lot more meaningful and memorable.

One of my students shared that her family looks for heart shaped rocks which they collect. Then on Valentine Day each year they say what love means to them and mom types it up and creates a picture with frame.

I love the formal dinner idea. That is a great chance for the family to sit down together and enjoy a good meal. It will also make the kids feel so special if everyone is dressed up for the occassion!!
